Chicago & North Western 2-8-2 #2304
Description:
Here is an example of an Alco built Mikado, 1 of 310 on the CNW roster. It had 62" drivers and developed 185 pai boiler pressure. A very versatile loco that served passenger and freight. No information was given on the back of the photo so the location and date are arbitrary.

Interesting note on the back of the photo states " C&N.W. Milwaukee div'n meat-train S.B. on Proviso cut-off, near Techny tower. Utter 'flatness' of background is typical of topography w and near Chgo." Beautiful action shot of this Alco-Richmond 2-8-2 Mikado built in November of 1918 for the Chicago & North Western Rwy. A short note on back states "E.B. on Linn Co Rwy 10-15-43." Specs - serial #58393, class J, 62" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylinders, engine weight of 304,500 lb, tractive effort of 59,167 lb. A stoker was applied in October 1940. The class remained in widespread service well into the 1950s. Unknown photographer.

Description:
Built by Alco, the Class-J 2-8-2 was the pride of the C&NW #400" passenger fleet. These engines were capable of producing speeds of over 100 mph and were in scheduled service producing average speeds of over 60 MPH including stops. Date and location of the photo is accurate.
